If you’ve visited Westonbirt over the past month, you’ll have noticed that our usual seasonal trail has taken on a personal twist…...

In July, Westonbirt’s Tree Team set off on a cross county journey to visit the Tree Team at Westonbirt’s sister site; Bedgebury Pinetum.

Over the coming months you will see that we are taking steps to protect some of our valuable parkland trees on the Downs, in particular old veterans, but younger trees planted for the future as well.

In 2012, we received some wonderful news – that we had been awarded £1.9 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help us embark on a project to improve Westonbirt, the National Arboretum.

Cattle are coming back to the downs! In mid-November, a group of Gloucester cattle will be taking up residence on the downland of Westonbirt Arboretum.

The Tree Team are currently working hard between Broad Drive and semi-natural woodland beyond the western side.

You may notice some temporary traffic lights outside the arboretum today and tomorrow (27 and 28 January 2016).

You may have seen some work going on in Silk Wood. We are improving access by creating a new stone surfaced path that links between Waste Drive and Broad Drive.

With so many to choose from, I can’t help but add a couple more examples to my top ten! I hope visitors to Westonbirt this autumn can enjoy identifying these maples on their walks...

This has been the most magical of all possible first Christmases at Westonbirt. Forget all the plastic ‘Winter Wonderland’ experiences out there, the snow has turned Westonbirt into the Real Thing...
