Tree of the Month - December 2017
What is tree of the month?
White barked birch - Betula 28.0268
Why is it tree of the month?
Many cultivated selections of the so called Betula utilis subsp. (formerly var.) jacquemontii in cultivation have turned out to be of hybrid origin, with either of the native silver birch, Betula pendula, or downy birch, Betula pubescens, (or their hybrid!) often considered as likely to be the other possible parent.
This tree falls into this category, having had its identity scrutinised by colleagues at Stone Lane Gardens in Devon, holders of the National Collection of Betula.
Where can I find it?
Whilst it isn’t the best time of year for identifying birches, with the leaves long since dropped and fruit often dispersed, it is a mighty fine time to admire the form and bark.
